Places to visit in Tokyo – Akihabara
Do you like games, electronics, manga, anime or cute maids? Then Akihabara is for you!
This district in central eastern Tokyo is also called Electric Town because this is where you go to buy cheap electronics. Well, nowadays the prices are about the same as everywhere else in Tokyo but the range of products is still huge in this area. Everything from household supplies to circuit board components can be found in Akihabara, or Akiba as the more frequent visitors call it. Take the JR Yamanote line to get to this otaku heaven.
During the last ten years the focus on electronics have been shifting towards more popular culture items such as games, manga and anime. There are several specialist stores who offer retro games, (such as Super Potato which is one my own favorites) cosplay outfits, dolls/figures, adult manga (called hentai), mobile phone straps and many other things. There is a niche for everyone! Not to mention all the special theme cafes such as the trending maid cafes, which really is a… uhm… special experience ^^
There are so many things to see and do in Akihabara and each one of them deserves their own post!
If you are going to Akihbara, here are some of the highlights:
- Super Potato (retro games and merchandise)
- Club SEGA (UFO Catchers and arcade games)
- Taito Game Station (large arcade games hall)
- Animate (huge building with anime, manga and figures)
- @home Cafe (a popular maid cafe)
Do you have a suggestion for a highlight? Please leave a comment!
Can you name any of the figures? ^^
